I’ve been Blogged at GeekDad

Chris Nixon | 31 May, 2008

One of my pictures has been blogged over at GeekDad, part of the Wired Blog Network.

Even though I’m subscribed to the blog, I completely missed my shot in it, but thanks to Flickr’s stats page it was very obvious that there was a lot of traffic coming through Wired.

Anyway “Nom Nom Nom” is one of my favourite phototgraphs of the wee one, so it’s nice that somebody else recognises it too.

Thanks GeekDad.

A Decade Without Seinfeld

Chris Nixon | 13 May, 2008

Tomorrow is the 10th Anniversary of the final episode of Seinfeld. It’s a show that never really caught on in the UK thanks to horrendous BBC scheduling, something which also killed off the brilliant  Larry Sanders Show. In the US however, Seinfeld was king.

I’m currently working through every season again, and I have to tell you, it really stands the test of time. It was a show about nothing, yet said so much about society. OK occasionally a joke about car phones may remind you that it’s not set in the current day, but everything else rings true even after all this time.

The Guardian observes:

It seems striking that while The Office, our defining sitcom of the 21st century so far, gave us an out-of-character happy ending with Tim and Dawn together and David Brent having at least not embarrassed himself on a blind date, Seinfeld ended with the four main characters, not married, not successful, not even happy, but sitting in prison about to start a one-year jail sentence. When it comes to comedy, perhaps we Brits are less sophisticated than we like to think.

There is nothing in the current schedules that matches it’s subtle humour. It would not get commissioned today. The smartest stuff never gets off the starting block, or gets cancelled early. It was American TV comedy’s finest moment.

Being a New Parent: Routines

Chris Nixon | 31 January, 2008

The End of a Long DayOne of the things that everybody asks me as a new parent is, “Has she settled into a routine yet?”

The answer is nearly always, “Yes! It’s brilliant!” And yet I am always wrong.

Babies settle into a routine for about three days, then everything changes. It’s not a bad thing. It’s just something you have to be aware of. Never be smug about those few nights of only getting up once in the night. It will change, and if you aren’t expecting it, it will bite you on the arse.

Make the most of those few days when your new baby is particularly settled. Take advantage of the rest, because next week you’ll need those extra resourses when he or she’s unsettled again.

Long Nights

Chris Nixon | 27 January, 2008

I’ve had a couple of long nights over the weekend. Feeding through the night has taken it’s toll on daytime activities, but I plan to get out of the house for an hour today to get my 2008 Community Challenge photograph today. I know it’s meant to be a planned shot, but I have no inspiration, so fresh air and a little light excercise will have to inspire me.

Where Does Time Go?

Chris Nixon | 25 January, 2008

The problem is not that I don’t have time to write a proper blog post, it’s that I don’t have time to think about something interesting to write. At most, I am getting an hour to kill each day and (no offence), I’d rather spend that precious time with the wife.

So what happens with the blog?

I’m not dropping it. I find it a good record for me about life, and some others seem to appreciate it too. My idea is to make my posts shorter and snappier, rarely thought out and often misplaced or stupid. Think Twitter+, but badly formatted.

I’ll also keep posting my photographs too.

As time passes, and The Frog starts to sleep through night, longer posts will return.

Our Holly: Enquisitive

Chris Nixon | 17 January, 2008

Enquisitive
View on Flickr :: View on Ipernity :: View on SmugMug :: View on Zooomr

Wow! I’ve just realised that I haven’t updated my blog in a few weeks. Since Holly was born on Christmas Eve it has been a rollercoaster of feeding (her), sleeping (her), losing weight (us), putting on weight (her). When I write it down it sounds like a nightmare, but it has been brilliant so far.

I am back at work, and still feel a bit like I am abandoning the girls every day as I leave the house, but it makes getting home so much better.

I’m sure there will be loads more updates as Holly settles into a pattern of sleeping and eating. Until then, posts may be a wee bit few and far between.

One Last Push

Chris Nixon | 23 December, 2007

Alison is booked in for an inducement tomorrow (Sunday) morning. She’s a week and a half overdue, and the doctor wants to make sure everything goes smoothly. We’re both pretty nervous. I think we’ve now had too much time to think about it, and we’re now aware that the concept of being parents is now very close to not being a concept but a reality.

Anyway…you’ll notice posting will be sporadic over at Photografr.com for the next couple of weeks. Those of you who are parents will completely understand, I’m sure.

I’ll keep you up-to-date as to the birth over at Twitter as much as I can, and I’ll put pictures up here soon.

All the best.

Half Way Point

Chris Nixon | 5 August, 2007

Half Way Point
I’m loving being a dad-to-be. Many guys complain that they don’t get any attention, or they have to put up with the mood swings of their partner, but it’s been brilliant in my experience.

We had our 20 Week scan this week. Everything is fine, so we are starting to get very excited. Before now we have been very cautious, but now it’s time to make proper preparations. We have to think about names, what type of nappies we’ll use, how we’ll decorate the room, even what nursery we’ll send the baby to when herself returns to work…if she returns to work.

Nothing is “Pie in the Sky” anymore. It has become a reality.
